Extended Producer Responsibility - E-Waste Management Rules

India is one of the fastest-growing electronic consumer markets in the world. As a result, when these products reach their end of use, India also generates a high level of e-waste. Recognizing the toxic and dangerous effects of this lack of e-waste management on the environment, the Government of India has introduced an expanded producer responsibility in the e-waste Management Rules, 2016.

These guidelines meet the stated goal of products that producers have to ensure that they are recycled when they reach the end of their use. Failure to do so involves imposing heavy fines. The objective of the guidelines is to ensure that every stakeholder involved in the mass production of e-waste is taking steps to ensure its safe disposal. Through these guidelines, we hope to see a model where the product which is at the end of its life is brought back to the manufacturer and then recycled by authorized recyclers.

Problems Faced by Stakeholders

Although the purpose of setting up such a system is to help producers and manufacturers of electronic goods, the rate of production of e-waste, and the lack of infrastructure for collection and subsequent recycling of e-waste, will address issues regarding implementation. have to face. Producers have been seen citing the target of recyclable e-waste with heavy penalties in cases where the guidelines were not met. This inconvenience is visible and ultimately inevitable for producers.
