Bengaluru produces an estimated two lakhs of heavy loads per year. However, 90% goes to landfills or scrap metal dealers, who then pass it on to illegal recyclers.
CleanToGreen is a campaign for the environmentally responsible collection and recycling of electronic scanners in Bangalore. We have sent a mission to urge people to leave e-waste at sorting centers in Bengaluru forest centers. 23 Christ College students have participated in this campaign.
Launched in January 2017, this campaign has connected with around 40,000 people through our Mission and Effort programs. What has been done so far:
- 3 tons of electronic interrupt collected
- 830 kg of fossil fuel by-products reduced
- 17 kg of harmful metals redirected from landfill
- 200 kg of absolute metals recovered
The e-waste collection in Bangalore is one of the fastest developing waste streams and India is the fifth largest generator of e-waste. Bangalore is the third largest generator of electronic scanners in the country and distributes around 100,000 tons of electronic scanners each year, which is likely to increase to 500% by 2020. In India and gradually, more than 90% of electronic wasteful end up in the area contingency for reuse with real consequences on human well-being and climate.
With the CleanToGreen program being rolled out in its first phase in South Bangalore recently, the issues are worth pointing out as it shows the right way to wrongly dispose and optimize e-waste. The Mindfulness program has targeted families and establishments (schools, universities, clinics, workplaces, retail, etc.) through workshops, missions, messages, and web-based media. Mindfulness Drive is maintained by a floor mount structure consisting of a door-to-door collection unit, a mailbox at Bangalore One Centers, and a portable mount van.
